Politicizing Disaster

"Planned Parenthood clinics in the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama are offering supplies and services at a reduced fee or for no charge for women with a valid Alabama, Louisiana, or Mississippi driver's license. In addition, Planned Parenthood affiliates in several other states are providing similar services to evacuees. " (Planned Parenthood)

I heard Hugh Hewitt make mention of this story today. And, I am disgusted.

Planned Parenthood, operating in its typical condescending and one-tracked fashion, is offering low cost and free abortion services to the victims of Katrina. Of ALL the possible ways that they could offer help! What a reflection of their sinister motives.

In the wake of Katrina, for whatever reason, everyone else (corporations, organizations and individuals) seemed to think that what people who'd just lost everything might need money, food and shelter. Strange how they all got the same idea, huh? Planned Parenthood was so much smarter. They saw what the rest of us failed to discern in this moment. Apparently, a woman in the midst of tragedy no longer wants to have the baby in her womb.

Why would PPH extend such an offer? Perhaps because they believe that children are dispensable; because they believe that children are a burden, not a blessing; because they believe it's only appropriate to have a child if you are rich and white (see Margaret Sanger's intention for abortion); because they believe Planned Parenthood knows better than a pregnant mother and her family.

What an insidious attempt to politicize and exploit victims of a disaster. That's shameful, even for Planned Parenthood.

Wow. This is as sickening as it is heartbreaking. I can't imagine what kind of pain the people in the Gulf Coast area are experiencing, and for Planned Parenthood to have the arrogance to take away the most precious thing these survivors have left is astonishing. God help those women and their families out there.

"Take away"? Where does it say anywhere on the Planned Parenthood site that anybody HAS TO have an abortion? That decision is still left to the mothers involved. Plus, Planned Parenthood provides other services (contraception devices, etc.) apart from just providing abortions. If you want to argue that Planned Parenthood's coporate response to the disaster is inadequate, that's one thing. But I don't know of any instance of them performing an abortion without the mother's consent.

I an stumped as to why this is happening. I had always assumed money was why they push their agenda so hard. I can't see the angle to this.

I fail to see the "politicizing" or "agenda pushing" here. Planned Parenthood is a business. They provide a service. Regardless of how any of us feel about the service they provide, it's legal and people use it. It isn't unreasonable to assume that there were a number of women who were planning to have an abortion, but those plans were disrupted just like everything else when the hurricanes hit. This isn't the type of thing you can put off for months, so Planned Parenthood is making it more convenient for them. That isn't any different from other corporations who provide their goods and services free or at reduced rates for disaster victims. To view Planned Parenthood's actions as anything other than a business tactic is, in itself, politicizing. To postulate that PPH has an agenda to wipe out all of the babies of disaster victims is quite a leap. (But William Bennett might tell you that it would reduce the crime rate.)

Don't knock it. In a disaster don't you know there are lives to save? Oh... that's not what they're doing. Sorry, my bad.

Where does it say they are ONLY offering free or low cost abortion services to Katrina victims? Planned Parenthood offers many services beyond that of abortion.

Pregnancy counseling, birth control tests and maternity advice are just a few of the options they offer. I know, I used their services when I was in my early 20's and in no way was I pushed or encouraged to have an abortion. They even recommended a great Doctor for me at the time. Fortunately I found out I wasnt pregnant after all.

Despite the devastation brought on by both of these hurricanes, there still exists a need for maternity and birthing services.

People are still having sex and still need to have maternity help.

With the entire infrastructure in shambles, their hospitals damaged, doctors offices and clinics blown away, where are they going to turn? They will need to find a place that is offering the services that Planned Parenthood provides.
