Fired for Supporting Troops?

San Francisco talk show host, Melanie Morgan, is said to have been fired last week. The disagreement between the ABC radio station (KSFO) and Melanie's agent is unknown. However, ABC recently fired another one of its hosts for controversial remarks he made about Islam.

This is mere speculation at this point. However, I cannot help but wonder whether ABC is succumbing to political pressure due to Melanie's involvement in Move America Forward's "You Don't Speak For Me, Cindy" Tour. The 20-city tour was not given half the airtime as was Cindy Sheehan. Move America's tour brought together families of soldiers who support the war effort in Iraq and who believe in the cause and in the president.

There may be no politics involved at all. Maybe this is simply coincidental. Maybe there are boring, legal and contractual disputes that have nothing to do with the troops, the president or the tour.

This may not be over. The two parties may resolve their differences. However, if this has ANYTHING to do with Cindy's private, personal and voluntary effort to show support for the troops serving abroad, I fear for the state of the media even more than I'd already been concerned. Obviously, owners have the right to hire and fire whomever they please. But, muzzling is a different story.

Melanie Morgan may end up joining Howard Stern and Michael Graham as another casualty in the current trampling of the First Amendment.

We don't really know all the facts about this, and I hope Melanie wasn't fired for her opinions or activities. But even if the worst is true, for every one of her there's a Bill Maher or Phil Donahue or Smothers Brothers who suffered the same fate. This isn't to justify any of this, but to illustrate that this type of thing has cut both ways.

Melanie Morgan back on KSFO 560 AM

As you know, last week ABC executives removed me from the airwaves of KSFO 560 AM and the "Lee Rodgers & Melanie Morgan Show". I was deeply disappointed that despite the fact that our show was one of the highest rated morning programs in the Bay Area (one of the largest radio markets in the nation) that these ABC executives would act in such a manner.

I cannot help but think they decided to punish me for my continued conservative activism. ABC also owns a liberal radio news/talk station in the San Francisco market and I find it hard to believe they would have treated their liberal hosts the same - especially if they had earned strong ratings.

I owe so many of you a "THANK YOU." The listening audience of KSFO immediately flooded the station when my removal was announced over the airwaves. Word spread across the Internet - including at FreeRepublic.com where many pro-troop conservatives discuss current events.

The outpouring of support forced ABC to reverse course and get me back on the airwaves (today).

(snip)

Thank you all again - now we have a lot of work to do to provide the support our troops need, to fight back against the anti-military propaganda, to tell the truth about the corruption and anti-Americanism at the United Nations, and to provide a positive alternative to the negativity of the "Blame America First" crowd.

And, we also need an alternative to the "do-nothing" conservative talk show hosts who never get off their lazy behinds to do anything but gripe.

An informed, educated and motivated public is the key to Move America Forward, and I am excited about working with you to continue the progress we've already made.

Warmest Regards,

Melanie Morgan

Cindy Sheehan doesn't speak for me either.
Way to go, Melanie. Keep marching forward.

LOL. I had a long comment all typed out in resonse to your post, blaming ABC for being Liberal partisans, etc before I read the comment announcing the news that she was back on the air!

The word verification saved me the embarrassment.

Liberal partisans? Don't forget that Bill Maher lost his ABC gig too. They didn't bring him back.

Truthfully, they have every right to fire her for any reason they want...........I don't think anyone has a "right" to any particular job.

And she shouldn't want to work for a sh--head company that would fire her for such a reason anyway.

Jaymeister: It does cut both ways. That's why I made a point to mention Howard Stern. I consider him thoroughly repulsive. However, he has every right to speak. And, if ANYONE decides he shouldn't be on the air, it should be the consumers. I agree about Bill Maher. Another one with whose views I could not disagree more. But, he too, is a casualty.

AJ: Thanks for the update. So glad she's back.

I agree that Howard Strern is repulsive. But I think his firing was not so much that his listeners (the ones who actually listen to him) found him offensive, but rather that his network was afraid of the fines that might be levied against it by the FCC - so there's a case for him being let go for just cause. Graham and Maher were sacked for expressing unpopular ideas, but if their employers felt that was costing them revenue, then I suppose they're fair game. As for Morgan, we don't really know. It's not like she became a pro-troops, pro-Bush conservative overnight and was fired for it - she's hardly the only conservative commentator at that station or on ABC affiliates. I'd like to hear the whole story on that. But let it be known that, on this issue, I'm in 100% agreement with Poison Pero.

I always thought Maher was fired because of poor ratings.

Poison Pero,
Perhaps we shouldn't Blog with a "sh--head" extreme liberal company, Google.

Melanie's contract wasn't re-newed because she is an active outspoken conservative and a pro troop American and Co-Chair of Move America Forward.
A Reformed Liberal
