Illegal Immigration Genius

"Today, a non-Mexican illegal immigrant caught trying to enter the United States across the southwest border has an 80 percent chance of being released immediately because we lack the holding facilities," Homeland Security Secretary, Michael Chertoff.

The Department of Homeland Security announced a comprehensive plan for border security: "Our goal at DHS (Homeland Security) is to completely eliminate the 'catch and release' enforcement problem, and return every single illegal entrant, no exceptions."

Okay, so, breathe in. Breathe out. Count to 10, if it helps you....

I must begin by saying that I am grateful for a plan, and for one that makes sense. However, it is now four years after that tragic Tuesday in September of 2001. We have found and, thankfully, stopped terrorists plots against us (and other nations). Chertoff explained that The problem is especially severe for non-Mexicans apprehended at the southwest border." Uh, right. THAT is precisely what so many have been desperately attempting to bring to your attention. Yes, THAT is the problem.

Ok. Again. Breathe in. Breathe out. I really am thankful. However, I do hope this is not too late. And, I feel like I need to brace myself to expect the war cry from those who will, inevitably, chastise this government and those who support this action as "insensitive" and possibly even "racist."

Our nation is at risk. While I am relieved that the administration has finally addressed the issue of illegal immigration, I cannot help but feeling that they let the American people down by waiting so long to reveal a common sense plan.

However, I believe that as long as the administration is quick and efficient in administering this strategy, the American people will be very forgiving. I know I will.

That's just this woman's perspective on this issue of the day...

I'm not too optimistic about this. Lately i am not too optimistic about much of anything.

I can't seem to think of anything original for my own blog and I have no fresh ideas from a different perspective to add to others.

Seems if the Department of Homeland Securuty does begin to implement a plan, there will undoubtably be other Departments and bureaus that will nullify them.

The wheels of government roll slowly, if at all.

I agree that we need to expel all illegal immigrants. But only after taking care of the border, and a few other steps as well. Read a proposal at: K-Block

I think that this is an effort to rally support from the base because nothing else is working and the administration's numbers are ridiculously low. So when everything else fails, go after the aliens. This has happened throughout history, the only difference is that now they are using 9-11 to try to justify it.

It won't work. The southwest border is too big and desolate to make apprehending even half the entrants possible, much less 100%.

In the area of drug enforcement, we long ago realized that the only way to solve the problem was reducing demand. The same is true for illegal immigration. Mexicans really do not want to come to the US, but they feel they have no choice given the poverty they live in. The problem won't be solved by law enforcment, but it may be solved by boosting Mexico's economy.

Another Think

I will believe it when I see it. I have no earthly idea why nothing has been done about this problem. There is no excuse in my opinion from any level of gov't nor any party for not taking action on this issue. It makes no sense to me at all.

At the KRLA 870 Townhall Meeting last sunday, this came up. Mike Gallagher was adamant with a zero-tolerance for illegal immigration, whereas Michael Medved argued for practical, REALISTIC solutions. Hewitt mentioned how you might go about controlling it, in part by punishing employers; but also cautioned that if you go this route, we will be thrown into a recession.

I really think, in order to really control it, you have to turn off the faucet as well as do the mopping up. What I mean is, besides fencing off the borders, guarding them, and capturing and deporting, we have to cut off the incentives that causes illegals to have the desire to come here illegally in the first place. As it stands, they have nothing to lose once they are here. The only danger is in crossing over in the first place. But after that, they have everything to gain.

I was planning on blogging something about illegal immigration.

k: welcome! i just checked out your blog. i like it! nice to have you comment here.

mark, david, ko and charlie: here's my response to a post over at LaShawn Barber's Corner:

"i have to agree with you, LaShawn. It's a miserable example of leadership. I like GWB. However, I too have seen some unusual behavior coming from this administration when his numbers dropped so much.

Even with regards to immigration...I am hopeful because this is the desperate cry of the American people--to be SAFE--that the policy that was unveiled today will mean something. However, though I didn't say as much on my site, I cannot help but wonder about the timing of this "strategy" relative to the drop in the president's popularity."

This is a joke!! It's nothing different than the Southwestern governors declaring a state of emergency, yet doing nothing.

The problem has so many layers:

1. I don't blame Mexicans for trying to get here......I would if I were them. And I'd keep coming back as long as they didn't kill me or my family. --> The rest of the world is a toilet-bowl, and who can blame anyone from wanting to escape the crapper.

2. Until businesses either decides to stop hiring illegals (hahaha), or is forced to stop through monsterous fines and enforcement, the problem will never end.

3. Republicans aren't willing to take on the problem, because they don't want to piss off big business.

4. Democrats aren't willing to take on the problem, because Mexicans are a pretty solid (D) voting block.........Legals and Illegals. --> And dead ones too.:)

5. Everyone in the problem (Govt, Business, Immigrants) knows the American people won't do anything to force the problem to be solved.

We won't stop buying their goods, we won't stop voting for whichever scumbag party we claim, and we won't pick up our guns and shoot everyone involved.

So, they could care less what we think/want, and will continue to dangle carrots in front of us, but will do nothing to solve the problem. Until.............

Until a terrorist with a dirty bome/nuke/etc., comes across.......Then they will do something, but it will be too damn late.

Well, here is my politically incorrect plan to eliminate illegal immigration:

1) Declare a national emergency on top of what the governors of Arizona and New Mexico have already done and start an IMMEDIATE rotation of National Guard units from all 50 states to patrol every inch of our southern border from California to Arizona to New Mexico to Texas. The illegal immigration problem impacts all 50 states and any governors who do not comply with a request for members of their National Guard units will have to answer for it in their re-election campaign.

2) Fine employers in this country $1,000,000 per each illegal alien they hire (have hired) and a $100,000 per year service charge if they continue to employ that person.

3) Start the construction of a wall similar to the one Israel is currently building all along our southern border.

4) For any illegal immigrants caught trying to cross the border begin the process of finger printing, retinal scans and facial profiling before deporting them back to the country where they came from.

5) Deport anyone currently here illegally with no exceptions.

6) Start a guest worker visa program where folks can legally visit the United States for a period of time to work here and potentially begin the immigration process.

7) Continue to encourage volunteers to sign up for duty with organizations like the Minuteman Project to work in conjunction with our border patrol.

8) Pass a new law that states a person having a baby here in the United States must be a citizen of this country for their newborn to be a citizen of the USA. Automatic deportation of the mother and newborn for non-compliance.

9) New immigrants to this country must pass a basic English proficiency and American history test as a prerequisite for USA citizenship.

10) Make English the offical language of the United States.

In summary we have to have a 100% absolute zero tolerance policy when it comes to illegal immigration. The candidate(s) who run to represent the citizens in our country on these 10 points will win their election to office in a landslide because the overwhelming majority of Americans support stopping illegal immigration in it's tracks.

EXPEL THEM ALL!!!!!!

Then politely invite them back with a postcard displaying an American Flag, and asking them to RE-ENTER the country LEGALLY.

The postcard will say:

"We really missed you guys, man I feel bad about what we did, but no hard feelings. Come back legally! Cuz if you don't, You're just wasting your life." - GWB

Lol

Lores, yeah, an actual 'real' barrier would take someone with conviction to be elected into office for sure.

My additional thoughts:

I'm the grandson of legal immigrants to this country. Folks who came here for freedom of religion and the opportunity to live and prosper in a free society.

Most of the fine folks who are here illegally from Mexico and other countries are no doubt very hard working and desire the same opportunity as my grandparents did back in the early 1900's. I'm personally not against them being here as long as it's above board and done through legal immigration channels.

Until someone is accepted as a new citizen of our great country a guest worker program is an excellent way for them to prove they are worthy of USA citizenship.

aj: i agree that it will take someone with real courage. however, i also think that if the nine points minus #3 were implemented, we'd be in good shape. i don't want to sacrifice part of who we are as a nation because we have failed to secure out borders.

I like AJ's plan, and as much as I appreciate the tough talk from Chertoff, I'd love to see a little more walk. I just don't think that will happen. And why just the OTM? I realize a full and strict enforcement of the existing LAWS may be asking to much from our politicians, but until I see action from Uncle Sam, consider me a Minuteman patrolling non-border areas!

Illegal immigration is a huge problem I agree, but we also need to keep in mind the luxuries it affords us. This country's economy relies very heavily on the labor provided by this group of people. They clean, cook, garden and do a lot at less than minimum wage. If I remember correctly the 9/11 criminals were all legal immigrants so I fail to see the correlation between 9/11 and illegal immigration. I agree a plan needs to be set in place to reduce the number of illegal immigrants. But to get rid of all illegal immigrants will mean to say bye to the cheap labor that WE ALL enjoy. A more realistic approach should be adopted. immigrants so I fail to see the corrolation between 9/11 and illegal immigration. I agree a plan needs to be set in place to reduce the number of illegal immigrants. But to get rid of all illegal immigrats will mean to say bye to the cheap labor that WE ALL benefit from

Doesn't it seem like it's taken a very long time to get some attention focused on this issue? It's very disturbing to me that our government, who begs for our dependency upon them, is doing so very little to protect us while at the same time, decrying those, like the Minutmen, as racist vigilantes.

Even the 9/11 commission said, it's not a question of if, it's a question of when we will be attacked again. Has the government just thrown up it hands and decided it's just too hard?

stan and goose: good points regarding the Minutemen. I believe that a failure to take action after the release of the plan/strategy, the Minutemen will be more empowered in this regard if the federal government does not follow through.

by the way, welcome to you both!

In line with anonymous said, it seems like the administration is trying to have it both ways. They are trying to get tough on illigal immigration, yet they still want a guest worker program. They are trying to set up some sort of system where they would be like an employment agency for illegal immigrants. Here is the conundrum: we don't want illegal aliens, but we need the cheap labor. It kind of sounds like Vicente Fox was right. I would venture to say that a large percentage of business owners are conservatives and they are the ones that hire this cheap labor force. And the reason you will never stop it is because of the demand in this country for this cheap workforce. Penalties against employers will never work because they will never be enforced. So there is a lot of big talk in time for the 2006 elections but nothing will ever get done. But it certainly makes for interesting conversation; look at all the comments.(Again, I really enjoy the civil discourse on this blog. It's so refreshing to see this kind of discussion without any namecalling and bad language. Thanks, Lores)

If you want to get into the United States from the middle east...start singing.."I'm leaving on a jet plane...sneaking across the US border"

All politicians fail on this. Whichever party comes out and says, "Illegal immigrants are breaking the law" will gain 10% from the Mexican community. That number goes up even more if we pass voter ID bills that stop illegals from voting for Democrats.

Saying you are for deporting illegals is as dangerous politically as saying, "I'm against child rape" or "I'm pro-breathing air"

This is defiantly one of those issues that I just can not understand when I use logic, common sense and reason...I guess that is my problem...

I'm sure we will get a lib in here who will use none of the tools I just mentioned.
